Yoga Therapy
Using the power of yoga to enhance the health and wellness of body, mind and spirit.

Yoga Therapy is a healing journey that focuses on the unique health and wellness needs of the individual, bringing balance to the body and mind. It is an in-depth and multi-faceted approach, working equally with the Physical, Emotional, Energy, Witness and Bliss bodies which comprise the complete individual. Yoga Therapy looks at which aspects of yoga (including modified postures, breathing, body awareness, relaxation and meditation techniques) would facilitate optimal wellness for that person’s unique situation. The Yoga Therapist then works closely with the person to design a yoga practice which meets the specific needs, goals and lifestyle challenges of the individual. Yoga Therapy is also wonderfully helpful in learning how to manage chronic or long-term health issues.

Judith Stark discovered Yoga in 1984 and soon came to appreciate its healing benefits, particularly in helping to manage the stresses of daily living. She obtained her first teaching credential in South Africa in 1993 through an Iyengar-based school. After moving to the Bay Area she undertook an 18-month teacher training program with Mark Horner in Walnut Creek. Judith’s appreciation for the healing nature of yoga led her to wonder how yoga could become more accessible to people who were particularly in need of help but because of physical limitations were unable to attend regular yoga classes. She began studying Yoga Therapy through Integrative Yoga Therapy in 2001 and has worked extensively with individuals on issues ranging from physical injuries such as knee and back problems through to spinal cord injuries, strokes, hip-replacements and stress management, among others. She runs an ongoing class to people in wheelchairs and also to people who are blind or have low-vision. The greatest reward Judith has is in seeing the tremendous progress made and the excitement on the faces of people who would otherwise be cut off from experiencing the joy of yoga.
